What is included in typical home theater systems?

It can be difficult to say what is "typical" in home theater systems, since the term is used in several different ways. Home theater systems used to involve expensive, large-scale remodeling projects that included large projection TVs, built-in speaker systems and integrated light and climate controls. Those are still common.

Less expensive home theater systems have gradually become available that involve little or no remodeling to install. These home theater systems usually include multiple surround-sound speakers and an audio receiver, which distributes multiple channels of sound data to the speakers. The audio receivers may or may not include a built-in DVD or Blue-ray disc player.

What do Dolby Digital, DTS and other similar terms mean?

Dolby Digital and DTS are sound data encoding standards. Sound information is encoded into DVD, Blue-ray discs and broadcasts and is decoded by home theater systems. Different encodings have different signal qualities, and some produce sound for high-definition media like Blue-ray discs. During decoding, the audio receiver sends the correct sound to each speaker.

Do the various speakers in the speaker system perform differently?

Yes. Home theater systems are designed to simulate multiple sound environments, depending on the setting of a film. To achieve these simulated effects, the speakers produce different effects. The front speakers in home theater systems are designed to provide a narrow cone of sound directly to the listener so as not to interfere with the rear speakers, which are designed to sound like they are coming from a wider area. The whole system is designed to work acoustically within an enclosed room.

Can I have a projector in a room that has windows?

Yes, any room can have a projection system as long as you have a way to control the ambient lighting; shades, draperies, and light dimmers all can accomplish this. We can also help improve conditions by using a special high-grain screen and higher contrast and light output projectors.

Should I get a plasma or LCD TV?

This depends on the use of your TV; both types of displays offer advantages. For gaming, presentation or static images an LCD is better because the image will not burn into the screen. If an image was left on an LCD overnight, no harm or damage would occur to the monitor. A plasma would have the image partially burned into the screen. For home theater and higher-ambient light applications, a plasma is a better choice. Typically plasmas have better black resolution, higher color saturation and faster performance than most LCD monitors. Plasma TVs also are typically lower in price than an LCD for the same size set.

Is a home theater really as good as going to the movies?

Once you have your own home theater, it's hard to imagine fighting the crowds, sharing armrests and dealing with offenders of the "silence is golden" rule. You can make a home theater as realistic as you'd like. Some people add accessories such as marquis, candy counters and real theater seating (the comfy kind!). However, a home theater can also be located in your family room, and still be better than a night at the local Cine Plex

Do I need a big home to have a home theater?

No! Believe it or not, everyone can have a home theater. Many people finish off their basements, attics or small rooms and use them as prime theater space. Even if you can't dedicate a room, you can still create a home theater atmosphere. There are a variety of options for the smaller areas, including the home theater in a box, which packs almost everything you need into one box-just add your TV!

What is the difference between front-projection and rear-projection?

Rear-projection TV is sort of like your average TV-if that TV is about 80 inches diagonally. Most of these units are large in size, have a base and a cabinet behind the screen to support the amazing picture that's being produced. Rear-projection TV's come in CRT (cathode ray tube), LCD (liquid crystal display), DLP (digital light processing), and LCoS (liquid crystal on silicon) models . A front-projection system is like a real cinema. This type of system would consist of a projector and a huge screen. Some systems can project images 10 feet wide, regardless of the source (DVD player, VCR, etc.) that it's coming from. These projectors utilize either CRT, LCD or DLP processing to produce film-like images.

Can I place attractive speakers in my landscape or around my pool to create an outdoor surround sound environment?

There are many manufacturers, such as James loudspeaker, that offer a variety of great all-weather speakers. They are usually sold in pairs or sets of 5 with a passive in-ground sub woofer to improve low frequencies. With speakers that look like landscape lighting available in 5 or more patinas, these are a much more aesthetically pleasing and longer lasting solution.

Can I control my TV, Stereo, equipment from my i Phone or i Pad?

Yes, you can. Many of today’s top A/V equipment manufacturers have created apps that work with Wi-Fi enabled devices to control your electronic components individually or in some cases with the same ability as a universal remote control.

Can I remotely control or access systems located in my home while on the road or at work?

Yes, you can. Through port forwarding and a static IP address, you can create a back door into your home network that will allow similar control to your A/V and home automation systems as though you were right there. Some manufactures even offer a free DNS service to do this for you without a static IP.
